Setting up Microsoft Authenticator
*To use Microsoft Authenticator as an MFA option, you need to have Microsoft Authenticator installed on your phone. Please download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store before proceeding.
- Log into Microsoft My Apps
- In the menu on the left side of the screen, click the My Account dropdown
- Choose Security Info
- Click + Add sign-in method
- Click Microsoft Authenticator
- Click Next
- Click Next
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator App, select to allow notifications (if prompted), select “Add Account” from the Customize and control icon on the upper right corner and select, “Work or School Account”.
- Scan the QR Code - You may be prompted to allow your camera access. You will need to ALLOW it. Scan the provided code with your Microsoft Authenticator App QR code reader, which appeared on your mobile device after you created your work or school account. After scanning select, “Next”.
- The Authenticator app should be successfully added to your work or school account without requiring additional information. A notification is sent to the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device, to test your account. Looks like the picture below. Select, “Next”.
- Approve the notification in your Microsoft Authenticator App, then select “Next”.
- Microsoft Authenticator is now set up as an MFA method. You can now close this My Account tab or click the My Apps link in the Menu at the left.

*To add the Microsoft Authenticator Passkey, ensure you have Microsoft Authenticator installed and your Northeast account configured on your phone.
- Log into Microsoft My Apps
- In the menu on the left side of the screen, click the My Account dropdown
- Choose Security Info
- Click + Add sign-in method
- Choose Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator
- Make sure your device has at least Android 14 or iOS 17, and that Authenticator is updated to the latest version. Click Next.
- If you already have Authenticator installed on your phone and your Northeast account added, you can skip this step. If you do not have your Northeast account set up in Authenticator, click the Add it now link and follow the instructions to add your account.
- Open Microsoft Authenticator on your phone. Locate and select your Northeast Community College O365 account and click it.
- Select Create a passkey
- Click Sign in
- Click Done and you can close the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Back on your computer, click Next
- Click Done
- You will now have a new sign-in method - Passkey (Device bound). You can now close this My Account tab or click the My Apps link in the Menu at the left.

- In the menu on the left side of the screen, click the My Account dropdown
- Choose Security Info
- Click + Add sign-in method
- Click the Passkey option
- Click Next
- Use the Camera on your iPhone to scan the displayed QR code
- Click the link that displays on your iPhone screen to save the Passkey
- When the "Save a passkey?" pop-up appears on your iPhone, select either 1Password (if installed) or Passwords.
- On your computer screen you should now see the option to name your passkey - click Next if you want to use the default name.
- Click Done
- You will now have a new sign-in method - Passkey (Synced). You can now close this My Account tab or click the My Apps link in the Menu at the left.
